Kintamani: Mount Batur Volcano & Batur Lake

When one goes to Bali and searches for possible tours, one of the more popular standard tour is the “Kintamani” tour. Tourist brochures tout it as the most favorite tourist destinations in Bali, with views of the active volcano, Mount Batur and the beautiful lake that surrounds it, Batur Lake.

Mount Batur  has erupted about 24 times since year 1800 and is still active up to now. Lake Batur, on the other hand, is the biggest lake in Bali and is an important source of irrigation of the surrounding rice fields.  Kintamani is  more appreciated during clear weather at around 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.  So most tours stop here at around lunchtime, and tourists flock the restaurants surrounding the area that offer magnificent views of Mount & Lake Batur.  Needless to say, food prices here may be a bit on the expensive side.

So, were we impressed? Hmmmm … let’s just say that with Tagaytay (with Lake Taal and the Taal Volcano in the bakground) as our yardstick, Kintanami rates a 5 out of 10.  If you have spare time in Bali and you happen to be in the area for the temples, you may want to go for a look and see.  But to travel all the way from Denpasar just to see this place (a two hour drive), I don’t think it’s worth the trip.

Just like in Tagaytay, there were fruit stalls along the roads leading up to the view area.  We saw strange fruits like the “snake” fruit, together with huge and succulent atis fruits. We didn’t try any of them since the prices, as expected, were too touristy for our pockets!
